Windsor area's population surge continues

The Windsor census metropolitan area (CMA) in Canada has experienced significant population growth, with 1,000 new residents settling in the region for the second consecutive month, bringing the total to 4,400 since April, surpassing the entire 2022 count of 4,000 new residents. This growth can be attributed to various factors, including affordability, family reunifications, and the region's attractiveness to businesses. Workforce WindsorEssex CEO Justin Falconer also pointed out the excitement generated by the battery plant and proximity to the U.S., along with other investments, as drivers of population increase.

The Windsor CMA's population has now reached 316,500, representing an increase of 17,100 since July 2020. This population surge is impacting local schools, with both public and Catholic school boards experiencing growth in enrolment after years of declining numbers. This growth is largely driven by newcomers and people migrating to the region, reflecting a positive change in Windsor's image and profile. Despite the rapid population growth, the local economy has managed to absorb newcomers without a significant increase in unemployment figures. The region expects further population growth in the coming months as companies hire employees for the electric vehicle and battery industries, emphasizing the need to address housing and transportation challenges to sustain this growth.
